Yellow to gold, also green and brown dyes can be obtained from the flowers, stems and leaves combined[168].
The leaves, flowers and stems have been used as an incense, especially in baby cradles[257].
Cultivation & Habitat
Seed – sow spring in a cold frame[1, 133]. The seed is best sown when it is ripe in the autumn. It usually germinates in 4 – 8 weeks at 15¡c[133]. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in a cold frame for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
Division is very easy at almost any time of the year, the divisions can be planted straight into their permanent positions if required.
Prefers a light well-drained soil and a sunny position[1, 133]. Requires a moist soil[208]. Succeeds in most soils[200], including poor ones[1], and also in light shade[200]. Succeeds in the shade of buildings, but not of trees[233].
Plants are hardy to about -25¡c[187].
The flowering stems can be dried and used as everlasting flowers[212].
Plants seem to be immune to the predations of rabbits[233].
Dioecious. Male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.
